WRAFT Goes to Lake Huron
Bob Topp, Executive Director of Waterfront Ratepayers After Fair Taxation (WRAFT) spoke on August 28 to a packed house of 120 waterfront residents at the Oakwood Inn in Grand Bend. The meeting was organized by WRAFT, ably assisted by members of the Oakwood Park Association. Attendees represented associations up and down the shores of Lake Huron. The purpose of the meeting was to inform existing member associations of the status of WRAFT's efforts to achieve a more equitable property tax system in Ontario. In addition it is hoped as a result of the meeting that more associations will join the twenty along the shore who are already members. In the last two assessments, Lake Huron waterfront has been particularly hard hit with rising assessments and resultant property taxes.
Mr. Topp outlined the extensive efforts underway to demonstrate to both bureaucrats and politicians the fundamental unfairness in the present assessment-based system for distributing property taxes. He took a number of questions and there was an active discussion among the participants. The meeting was very well attended, particularly considering the beautiful late summer day outside.
