Strategy
We have met with countless stakeholders over the past four years — elected officials, ministry bureaucrats, ratepayers groups, and hundreds of homeowners. We have urged property owners to write to their MPPs, but we recognize that doing so requires a fair amount of effort; and that rank-and-file MPPs are very limited in their power and ability to influence Government policy and action.
This year, we want to take our message — and your support — directly to the Government of Ontario.
First, we are holding a News Conference at Queen's Park on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. We will present an independent study that clearly demonstrates that the 2008 assessment will again be the cause of major shifts of property tax onto urban centres and waterfront areas across Ontario.
Second we will announce the establishment of an online petition, through which we hope to accumulate the signatures of thousands of Ontario homeowners who share our concerns and our objective.
Third, at an appropriate time, later this year, we will deliver our petition to Queen's Park.
We are a volunteer association, on a very limited budget. So undertaking a massive advertising and awareness campaign is, unfortunately, not possible.
But if we can attract a sufficient number of "signatures" to our petition — including yours — we will have a better chance of influencing the Government's attitude on this issue. (To sign the petition, just go back to the Home Page and fill out your name and address.)
While gathering a meaningful volume of support on our petition, we will continue to press the Government for a fairer system on behalf of all Ontario homeowners.
